Dubai Marina: what is free, what costs money, and what to book

7 min read

Dubai Marina's waterfront promenade is free to walk: Visit Dubai puts it at a seven-kilometre loop with over 305 retail outlets and 69 dining venues. What costs money is what you do on, over and beside the water. We sell three of those things: a three-hour superyacht cruise, the XLine zipline and Flying Cup. This guide sets out what each includes, who can go, and how to reach the Marina by tram, metro and water taxi.

The Marina on foot

Dubai Marina Walk is free to visit. Visit Dubai describes a seven-kilometre loop along the waterfront, dotted with over 305 retail outlets and 69 dining venues, and says that everything bought at them must be paid for and that parking is typically paid.

Its open-air Covent Garden Market runs from October to April, and the same page lists boat rides among the things to do. Parking sits under the buildings along the waterfront: typically free for a short while and then charged by the hour, with free parking possible if an outlet validates your voucher.

On the water

RTA runs an air-conditioned water taxi that hops on and off at four stops in the Marina: Marina Terrace, Marina Walk, Dubai Marina Mall and Marina Promenade. A hop between neighbouring stops is AED 7 and the full route is AED 7 to AED 21, depending on the number of stops. A separate route links Dubai Marina Mall South with Bluewater for AED 7. RTA's page states no operating hours, so check before you plan around it.

The boat seats 20 passengers and has a wheelchair space. Unaccompanied children under 12 are not allowed, and children under 12 with an adult must wear a life jacket.

Our superyacht sails from Dubai Marina three times a day, at 13:00, 17:00 and 21:00, for three hours each time. It is 42 metres long over three decks, with a live DJ, a live cooking station, and soft and alcoholic drinks included. It anchors for a swim stop, with an inflatable pool alongside, after passing Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai and running along the Palm Jumeirah crescent to the Burj Al Arab. On UAE dry days the entertainment pauses and no alcohol is served.

Report at the marina 30 minutes before departure, at the berth printed on your voucher: arriving after the departure time counts as a no-show, with no rescheduling and no refund. Hotel transfers are not included, the dress code is smart casual, and outside food and drink are not permitted. Cancellation is free up to 1 day before.

XLine, the zipline

XLine's zipline runs 1 km from a platform 170 m above the ground, at up to 80 km/h, with the rider belly-down in a harness. XLine's own site prices it at AED 699 for riders aged 17 and over and AED 499 for ages 12 to 16. Its ticket channel opens on "From 499 AED", which is the young adventurer fare, not the adult one.

Riders must be 12 to 65 years old, at least 130 cm tall and between 45 kg and 100 kg. XLine rides every day from 10:00 to 12:20 and from 14:00 to 17:00, and its booth is at Dubai Marina Mall, which its page calls "L2 parking". Our XLine guide has the rules, the refund terms and the places where XLine's own pages disagree.

Flying Cup, and what we could not confirm

Our listing describes Flying Cup as an open-air gondola lifted to 40 metres for about 20 minutes, with a hot dog and a drink included. It takes children from 4 with an adult, is not wheelchair accessible, and flies only in suitable wind and weather: a flight can be postponed or rescheduled. Sunset slots sell out first.

We could not find a current operator page for it. The Beach JBR's own site does not name Flying Cup on its Play page, in its shops or among its restaurants, so everything above comes from our own listing. Check that the flight is running before you build an evening around it; our listing offers free cancellation up to 1 day before.

Getting there

Dubai Marina Walk lies just off Sheikh Zayed Road and is easy to reach by car and taxi. It is walkable from two tram stops, Jumeirah Lake Towers and Dubai Marina, which you reach from the DMCC or Sobha Realty metro stations.

Each of our three meets somewhere different: the superyacht at the marina berth printed on your voucher, XLine at Dubai Marina Mall, and Flying Cup at The Beach, JBR. Use the meeting point on your voucher.

Which to book

With children, the limits decide. XLine's youngest rider is 12, Flying Cup takes children from 4 with an adult, and on the superyacht children aged 5 to 12 pay a reduced fare and children under 5 sail free.

For timing, XLine rides only in daytime windows, from 10:00 to 12:20 and from 14:00 to 17:00. The superyacht has an evening sailing at 21:00, and the Flying Cup sunset slot is the one that sells out first.

Dubai Marina Superyacht Cruise with DJ, Live Cooking and Pool

Spend an afternoon or an evening aboard a 42-metre tri-deck superyacht, cruising out of Dubai Marina past the Palm, Ain Dubai and the Burj Al Arab. It is the kind of boat most people only ever see from the shore, and for a few hours you have the run of it: three decks, a red-carpet departure and room to move rather than a seat in a row. A live DJ plays throughout, a chef works an open cooking station, and drinks are included in the fare. When the yacht anchors you can swim straight off the back into the Gulf, with an inflatable pool alongside for anyone who would rather stay out of open water. Three sailings run each day, so pick the one that suits you: Brunch at 1pm for the long lunch, Sundowner at 5pm for the light on the skyline, or Nightfall at 9pm once the marina towers are lit. Each lasts three hours. Children aged 5 to 12 travel at a reduced fare and under-fives sail free.

Xline Dubai Marina

XLine Dubai Marina is the longest urban zipline in the world, and the numbers only tell half of it: you launch from a tower 170 metres up and descend a full kilometre at speeds approaching 80 km/h, flying head-first and face-down directly over the Marina canal with the towers rising on either side of you. This is not a scenic cable ride - the position and the speed make it a genuine adrenaline experience, and the view is the Marina from an angle nobody else gets. Safety gear and a full briefing are provided, and the launch team runs every rider through the harness and the flying position before release. You can go solo or tandem alongside someone else. The booking runs about thirty minutes including check-in and briefing; the flight itself is over in roughly a minute.

Dubai Flying Cup at Marina Beach Ticket

Flying Cup is a tethered observation balloon on Marina Beach that lifts a circular open-air gondola to 40 metres - about twelve storeys - and holds it there while you take in a full 360-degree view. On one side is the wall of Dubai Marina towers; on the other, the open Gulf, JBR beach and Ain Dubai along the coast. The gondola is open to the air rather than glazed, so you feel the breeze and hear the beach below, and a bar in the centre serves a drink included with your ticket while you are up. The whole experience takes around 20 minutes from boarding to landing, which makes it easy to slot into a Marina evening rather than plan a day around. Sunset is the slot people book first, for obvious reasons, so reserve ahead if that is what you want. There are safety rails and staff on board throughout, and the ride is smooth rather than thrilling - it suits families and anyone who would rather have the view than the adrenaline.
