About this experience
Armenia is traditionally held to be the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion, in 301, and its monasteries are its greatest treasure. This small-group tour leaves Yerevan every Monday and, over five days, takes no more than six travellers in a minivan with an English-speaking guide to the finest of them, from the mother church at Etchmiadzin to Noravank's red-rock gorge in the south and the cliff-top monasteries of the Debed Canyon in the north.
Book a seat only and arrange your own accommodation, or add 4-star hotels: three nights in central Yerevan and one in the forest town of Dilijan, sharing a twin room or in a room of your own.

Your five days
Day 1 (Monday), Etchmiadzin: meet your guide at 13:00 on Republic Square in Yerevan, then visit Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the churches of Saint Hripsime and Saint Gayane and the ruins of Zvartnots.
Day 2, the Ararat Valley: Khor Virap in front of Mount Ararat, the church of Areni and Noravank Monastery in its red-rock gorge.
Day 3, Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan and Dilijan: the Temple of Garni, Geghard Monastery, Sevanavank above Lake Sevan and an evening in Dilijan.
Day 4, Haghartsin, Haghpat and Sanahin: a forest monastery near Dilijan, then the two UNESCO monasteries of the Debed Canyon, and back to Yerevan.
Day 5 (Friday), departure: breakfast and a free morning for travellers on a hotel option. The guided touring ends on the evening of day 4.
A small group, never a coach
You travel with at most five other travellers in an air-conditioned minivan, so every stop has room for questions and photos. The tour runs every Monday from October to May, even if you are the only traveller booked.

Itinerary

Arrival and Etchmiadzin
Meet your group: meet your guide at 13:00 on Republic Square in central Yerevan, in front of the History Museum of Armenia, and board the group's minivan. Etchmiadzin Cathedral: visit Etchmiadzin, the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church and one of the oldest cathedrals in the world, founded in the early fourth century. Saint Hripsime and Saint Gayane: visit two seventh-century churches named after Christian women martyred here, masterpieces of early Armenian architecture. Zvartnots Cathedral: walk among the ruins of the seventh-century Zvartnots Cathedral, part of the same UNESCO World Heritage Site as Etchmiadzin. Back in central Yerevan in the early evening, where travellers on a hotel option check in to their 4-star hotel. Overnight in Yerevan.

Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank
Khor Virap: drive south through the Ararat Valley to Khor Virap Monastery, where Saint Gregory the Illuminator was held in a pit for years before he converted Armenia's king to Christianity. On a clear day Mount Ararat fills the sky behind it. Areni church: stop at the 14th-century church of Surb Astvatsatsin in Areni village, whose carvings are the work of Momik. Noravank Monastery: end the day at 13th-century Noravank, known for its two-storey church and the carvings of the master sculptor Momik, at the head of a narrow gorge of red cliffs. Back in Yerevan in the late afternoon. Overnight in Yerevan.

Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan and Dilijan
Temple of Garni: drive east to the first-century Temple of Garni, Armenia's only standing Greco-Roman colonnaded temple and a reminder of the country before Christianity. Geghard Monastery: continue up the valley to Geghard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose chapels are carved out of the mountain itself. Lake Sevan: cross the mountains to Lake Sevan, the largest lake in the Caucasus, at about 1,900 metres, and climb to the ninth-century churches of Sevanavank on their peninsula. Dilijan: continue north through the mountains to Dilijan, a forest town known as Armenia's Switzerland, and walk its restored old street of craft workshops in the evening. Overnight in Dilijan.

Haghartsin, Haghpat and Sanahin
Haghartsin Monastery: in the morning, visit Haghartsin, a monastery of the 10th to 13th centuries hidden in the forest of Dilijan National Park. Haghpat Monastery: drive north to the Debed Canyon and climb to Haghpat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the 10th to 13th centuries, with its bell tower and carved cross-stones. Sanahin Monastery: cross the canyon to Sanahin, Haghpat's neighbour on the same UNESCO listing, whose dark halls once housed a famous school and library. Then the long drive back to Yerevan, arriving in the evening. Overnight in Yerevan.

Free morning and departure
Travellers on a hotel option have breakfast and a free morning before checking out. The guided touring ends on the evening of day 4, and airport transfers are not included.

Know before you go
- The tour leaves every Monday at 13:00 from Republic Square in central Yerevan and runs even with a single traveller booked. Groups are never larger than 6.
- There are three options: a seat only, with no hotels; a seat with 4-star hotels in a shared twin or double room, for two travellers booking together; or a seat with 4-star hotels in a room of your own.
- With the seat-only option you arrange your own accommodation, including the night of day 3 in Dilijan. We can suggest hotels on the group's route.
- Airport transfers are not included. A taxi from Zvartnots International Airport to central Yerevan takes about 20 minutes.
- After booking we will ask for each traveller's name as it appears on their passport.
- Churches and monasteries ask visitors to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees; many women also cover their hair with a scarf.
- Children aged 3 and over pay the traveller price. For children under 3, contact us before booking.
- Services are held in many of these churches. Your guide will tell you when to wait or keep quiet, and photos are not taken during a service.
- Day 4 is a long day of about 11 hours, with around five hours of driving on mountain roads.
- In winter, snow can slow the mountain roads to Dilijan and the Debed Canyon. If a road is unsafe, your guide changes the order of the days or the route.
- There are no entry fees at the churches and monasteries on this route; the Temple of Garni is included.
- Mount Ararat stands across the border in Turkey and is often hidden by cloud or haze, especially on summer afternoons. Clear mornings are most likely from October to April.
- Armenia's currency is the dram (AMD). Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan; carry some cash for villages, markets and roadside stalls.
- A passport valid for your whole trip, and a visa if your nationality needs one for Armenia
- Comfortable walking shoes: the monastery grounds and paths are steep, rocky or uneven
- A warm layer for Lake Sevan, Dilijan and the Debed Canyon, which are cooler than Yerevan
- A scarf, and clothing that covers shoulders and knees, for church visits
