Visitor guide

Palm Jumeirah: how to get there, and what to book

6 min read

Visit Dubai sums the island up as high-end hotels, beach clubs and dining for sun-seekers. The monorail's own page is more concrete: a man-made island reaching 5 km into the Arabian Gulf, with 17 fronds of homes, hotels and attractions. Almost nothing on it needs a ticket. This guide covers the few things that do, and how to move between them.

Getting on to the island

The RTA's stations map lists Palm Jumeirah as the ninth of the Dubai Tram's 11 stops, between Media City and Knowledge Village. From there the monorail's Palm Gateway station, at the entry to the island, is the interchange: the operator's page says the station can be reached from the Dubai Tram and has over 1,600 parking spots.

If you drive, the monorail's stations page offers 3 hours free parking on ticket validation, with an AED 10 fee per hour after the third hour.

Moving along the Palm

The monorail is a 5.5 km line, opened in 2009, with four stations in order: Palm Gateway, Al Ittihad Park, Palm Jumeirah Mall and Atlantis Aquaventure. Palm Jumeirah Mall station is the one for The Palm Tower and The View; Atlantis Aquaventure station sits by the waterpark entrance. The operator's timetable says trains run every 15 minutes.

The operator's timetable page publishes the current daily schedule, the same on weekdays and weekends, with 15 minutes between departures. It has also posted a maintenance notice, so check the operator's own page on the day rather than building a plan around the monorail.

The View at The Palm

The visit starts at the Palm Jumeirah Exhibition, then a lift reaches Level 52 in 45 seconds, 240 metres above sea level, where the deck looks over the island, the Gulf and the skyline. The Next Level, on Level 54 at 250 metres, is the upgrade. Standard admission is from AED 115 for an adult aged 13 and over and from AED 80 for a child aged 3 and over; The Next Level admission is from AED 190 and adds fast track.

Atlantis: the waterpark and the aquarium

The last monorail stop is Atlantis, where there are two separate tickets: Aquaventure Waterpark, open 10:00 to 18:00, and Lost World Aquarium, open 11:00 to 20:00 and indoors. The waterpark is the outdoor one and has a 1.2 m rule on some rides; the aquarium is the indoor one, and is what we still sell under its old name, The Lost Chambers.

Which of the two to choose, and whether the ticket that covers both is worth its price, is a question of its own: our Aquaventure and Lost World Aquarium guide answers it, and both tickets are below.

What no official page tells us

No first-party page we read squares the operator's maintenance notice with the timetable it goes on publishing, gives a price for any beach, beach club or restaurant on the island, or says what an interruption would mean for a ticket already bought. Ask us before you travel rather than trust a figure from anywhere else.

The View At The Palm

The View sits on the 52nd floor of The Palm Tower, and it is the one place you can see Palm Jumeirah as the shape it was designed to be. From ground level the Palm is effectively invisible - just ordinary streets and villas. From up here the whole thing resolves at once: the fronds, the trunk running back to the mainland, the crescent closing it off, and Atlantis at the far end. The observation deck runs a full 360 degrees, so the same visit also gives you the Marina towers, the Burj Al Arab and the coastline stretching away in both directions. There are enclosed and open-air viewing sections separated by a movable glass partition, so you can step out into the air when the weather suits. Half an hour is enough to see it, though most people stay longer around sunset.

Atlantis Aquaventure Water Park Ticket

Aquaventure at Atlantis, The Palm is the largest water park in the region, spread across the end of Palm Jumeirah with the Atlantis resort as its backdrop. The headline rides are the ones that drop you: near-vertical slides from the Tower of Neptune and the Tower of Poseidon, including a shark-filled lagoon you pass through in a clear tube, plus a set of raft rides that take groups of four. Around them the park runs gentler water: a long lazy river with rapids and wave surges, a wave pool, and two large children's play areas with scaled slides and tipping buckets. Entry also gives access to a private beach on the Gulf, which is where most people end the afternoon. Allow at least four hours; a full day is comfortable. Bring swimwear, a towel and strong sunscreen - lockers, changing rooms, towels and food outlets are on site. Height and age limits apply on the tower slides and are posted at each queue.

Floor-to-ceiling windows look into the Ambassador Lagoon, where sharks, rays and shoals of fish glide past sunken ruins. It suits families, couples and first-time visitors to Dubai, and it is all indoors, a cool break from the heat. Your ticket is standard entry to the aquarium.
