The Gold Souk and Old Dubai: how to get there, and what to book

3 min read

The Gold Souk sits in Deira, which Visit Dubai describes as a neighbourhood of heritage and souks. There is nothing to book for the souk itself, so this guide does the useful part: which metro station to take, what the creek crossing costs, what Al Shindagha Museum charges on its own site, and what to book for the evening.

Getting to the Gold Souk

RTA's metro map puts Gold Souq station (G22) on the Green Line, with Baniyas Square before it and Al Ras after it. Visit Dubai lists the Gold Souk under shopping, as a place for gold ornaments and gemstones.

Crossing the creek by abra

RTA's CR1 abra links Bur Dubai Abra Station and Deira Old Souq Abra Station for AED 1 per passenger per trip, cash only, from 6:00 to midnight. A second route, CR2, links Dubai Old Souq and Al Sabkha and runs 24 hours. A private abra costs AED 60 for 30 minutes or AED 120 for an hour.

Al Shindagha Museum

The museum's own site prices entry to two houses at AED 50 for an adult, AED 40 for a group and AED 20 for a student. Children, people of determination and the museum's "UAE Over 60" category enter free, and its own checkout names the student ticket as ages 5 to 24 and the group rate as 5 people or more. It is open daily 10:00 to 20:00 with last entry at 19:00, and its sections are Governance and Society, Creativity and Well-Being, Living off the Sea and Land and a Children's Pavilion.

Our ticket for it is on the card above.

Ending the day on the water

Our shared yacht cruise leaves at 16:00 and lasts two hours, boarding at Dubai Harbour in Dubai Marina rather than on the creek, so it is a separate trip from the souks and not a creek cruise.

What no official page tells us

We found no first-party page giving opening hours for the Gold Souk or the Spice Souk, a gold price, or a dress code, so this guide gives none. Check on the day, and treat any figure you are quoted for the souks as unconfirmed.

Al Shindagha Museum Entrance Ticket

Al Shindagha Museum is Dubai's largest heritage museum, and it occupies the right site for the job: the historic Al Shindagha district on the mouth of Dubai Creek, in and around the restored merchant and ruling-family houses where the city's public life was conducted before the towers. Rather than a single building it is a cluster of pavilions along the waterfront, each taking one thread of the story - the Perfume House, the Dubai Creek story, the Perfume and Traditional Medicine galleries, and the houses themselves, built of coral stone and gypsum with wind towers for cooling. The displays lean on interactive and audiovisual exhibits rather than glass cases, which makes it work for children as well as for anyone who wants the history properly. Allow around ninety minutes, more if you intend to see every pavilion. It sits within walking distance of Al Fahidi, the abra stations and the souks, so it fits naturally into a morning in old Dubai.

Dubai Sharing Yacht Cruise

Two hours on a shared yacht is the easiest way to see the parts of Dubai that face the water - and most of the landmarks do. You cast off into Dubai Marina, where the towers close in tight on both sides, then head out past Dubai Harbour and Bluewaters Island with Ain Dubai turning above you. From there the route runs along Jumeirah Beach, around the fronds of Palm Jumeirah, past the royal palaces and the private island, and out to the Burj Al Arab standing on its own artificial island - the most photographed building in the city, seen from the side it was designed to be seen from. A snack and a drink are included. Because the boat is shared rather than chartered, it costs a fraction of a private hire while covering exactly the same water.
