Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Dubai vs Abu Dhabi: what each city is for, and how to split your days

7 min read

Dubai vs Abu Dhabi is rarely an either-or: the two cities are close enough to share one trip. Dubai has Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain, the Creek and the desert; Abu Dhabi has the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Qasr Al Watan, the Louvre on Saadiyat Island and the theme parks of Yas Island. The train between them takes 64 minutes, and our tours plan on about 90 minutes on the road each way. This guide sets out what each city is for, how to travel between them, and when Abu Dhabi deserves nights of its own.

What each city is for

Dubai is the city of the big views and the old Creek. At the Top puts you on Levels 124 and 125 of Burj Khalifa, entered from Dubai Mall, and the Dubai Fountain plays on the 30-acre Burj Lake beside Dubai Mall every 30 minutes from 18:00 to 23:00. Beside the Creek, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood has over 50 'houses' to explore, and an abra crosses to the souks of Deira for AED 1. Visit Dubai calls a trip into the desert a must-do, and Palm Jumeirah adds Atlantis, The Palm, Aquaventure World and The View at The Palm.

Abu Dhabi's draws are its mosque, its palace and its museums. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is open to visitors who book an online access pass; Qasr Al Watan is a working presidential palace; and the Saadiyat Cultural District holds Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena. Yas Island, 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi, is the theme-park island: Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, SeaWorld and Yas Waterworld.

How far apart, and how to travel between them

By road, Yas Island's own site puts the island 50 minutes from Dubai and 20 minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi. Our Abu Dhabi tours, which collect you from your Dubai hotel and drive to the Grand Mosque, plan on about 90 minutes each way, and our private transfer allows roughly two hours, depending on traffic and where in Abu Dhabi you are going.

By train, Etihad Rail runs between Dubai Station, at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and Abu Dhabi Station in Mohamed Bin Zayed City. On 8 October 2026 its live schedule listed four trains each way, each taking 64 minutes: from Dubai at 06:14, 07:14, 17:14 and 18:14, and back from Abu Dhabi at 06:43, 07:43, 16:43 and 17:43. Both stations open from 05:00 to 23:00; Dubai Station has a transfer bridge to the metro, and Abu Dhabi Station a bus stop and a taxi rank.

By bus, RTA's intercity route E100 runs from Al Ghubaiba to Abu Dhabi bus station, and the E101 from Ibn Battuta. RTA suggests booking an eTicket online, which gives you a dedicated boarding lane at the station.

A day trip from Dubai, or nights in Abu Dhabi?

One day is enough for the Grand Mosque and one more sight. Our 9-hour city tour adds Heritage Village, BAPS Hindu Mandir and photo stops to the mosque; our 11-hour Cultural Heritage tour pairs it with Qasr Al Watan or the Louvre. Our Abu Dhabi day trip guide sets out each place's hours, rules and dress codes.

Give Abu Dhabi nights of its own if you want its evenings or more than one district. Qasr Al Watan's Palace in Motion show starts at 20:00, after the last train back to Dubai, which on 8 October 2026 left Abu Dhabi at 17:43. Visit Abu Dhabi recommends at least two full days for the Saadiyat Cultural District, and Yas Island has hotels of its own beside its four parks.

Outside Ramadan, when its hours change, the Grand Mosque is open to visitors from 09:00 to 20:30, except on Fridays, when it closes to them from 11:30 to 14:30. Plan a Friday visit around that break.

Which tickets belong to which city

In Dubai: Burj Khalifa's At the Top, from AED 189 on its own site, with under-3s free; the desert safari, which our evening tour runs with hotel pickup; and the abra across the Creek, AED 1, paid to the driver.

In Abu Dhabi: the Grand Mosque's pass, AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE, AED 5 with an Emirates ID and AED 8 through a tour operator; Qasr Al Watan, AED 65 for adults with the Palace in Motion show included; the Louvre, AED 70 for adults (18 and over), VAT included, and free for under-18s; and Ferrari World and the other Yas Island parks.

Our tickets for both cities are listed below, with live prices. Our Qasr Al Watan and Louvre combo covers both in one ticket, and our Yas Island theme parks guide compares the four parks.
