Mangystau is the strangest landscape in Kazakhstan and still one of the least visited places in Central Asia. West of the Caspian port of Aktau the steppe drops away into a chalk seabed that dried out forty million years ago, leaving white cliffs, isolated pinnacles and salt pans that mirror the sky. This five-day private expedition takes you across it by 4x4, with a driver who knows the tracks and a guide who can read the rock, and puts you in a desert camp for two nights so you see Bozzhyra at sunset and again at first light.

Private from start to finish
Mangystau has almost no public transport, no fuel stations on the desert tracks and no mobile signal for long stretches, which is exactly why it should not be attempted on your own. You travel in a private 4x4 with a driver who works this desert regularly, a guide who stays with you throughout, and a support plan for water, fuel and recovery. Nobody else joins your vehicle.

Arrival in Aktau and the Caspian shore
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Aktau airport and brings you into the city, a Soviet-planned port where the streets have numbers instead of names. The afternoon is deliberately light so you arrive rested for the desert. Aktau seafront promenade — a long walk above the Caspian, with the lighthouse that sits on top of an apartment block rather than on the shore. Sunset over the Caspian — the water faces west here, so the sun goes down directly into the sea. Briefing with your guide — you go through the route, the camp nights and what to pack into the 4x4 before an early start tomorrow. Overnight in Aktau.

Torysh, Sherkala and the Valley of Castles
You leave the Caspian behind and head inland into the Ustyurt country, stopping at the sights that make the northern Mangystau so strange. Torysh, the Valley of Balls — thousands of stone spheres, some taller than a person, scattered across open steppe. They are concretions that formed around a nucleus in ancient sediment and were left behind as the softer rock eroded away. Sherkala Mountain — an isolated white dome that looks like a yurt from one side and a crouching lion from another. You walk around part of the base. Airakty, the Valley of Castles — an amphitheatre of eroded chalk outcrops that the Russian poet Taras Shevchenko sketched during his exile here in the 1850s. Shopan-Ata underground mosque — the oldest of the region’s rock-cut mosques, carved into a hillside and surrounded by a vast old necropolis. Overnight in a guesthouse near Shetpe.

Bozzhyra
Today is the reason people come to Mangystau. The track runs south across empty plateau and then simply stops at the edge of a cliff, with the whole Bozzhyra valley opening below you. Bozzhyra upper viewpoint — the classic vantage over the valley, with the two chalk fangs known as the Tusks rising from the floor. The Yurt viewpoint — a separate outcrop shaped like a row of yurts, reached along the rim. Descent into the valley — conditions permitting, your driver takes the 4x4 down onto the valley floor so you can look back up at the pinnacles from below. Sunset from the rim — the chalk turns from white to gold to deep orange in about forty minutes. Overnight at the desert camp near Bozzhyra, with dinner under the stars.

Tuzbair salt flat and the underground mosques
First light at Bozzhyra, then north across the Ustyurt plateau to the salt country and the pilgrimage sites. Sunrise at Bozzhyra — the valley fills with mist on many mornings and the pinnacles appear to float. Tuzbair salt flat — a white pan beneath a long chalk escarpment. After rain a shallow film of water turns the whole surface into a mirror. Beket-Ata — the most revered underground mosque in Kazakhstan, cut into a cliff at the head of a valley and reached on foot down a long stairway. Pilgrims come here from across the country. Shakpak-Ata — a cruciform mosque carved into the rock above a necropolis, with carved columns and worn inscriptions inside. Overnight at the desert camp, or in a guesthouse, depending on the day’s conditions.

Karagiye depression and departure
A last piece of Mangystau on the way back to the coast, timed around your flight. Karagiye depression — at 132 metres below sea level this is one of the deepest dry hollows on earth, and the road runs along its rim. Return to Aktau — time for a shower and a late lunch at the hotel if your flight is in the evening. Airport transfer — your driver takes you to Aktau airport for your onward flight. End of the expedition.
