Sobre esta experiência

The path to the ancient monastery

We will meet in Tbilisi and head south-east towards the Georgian-Azerbaijani border. The only village that you will meet on the way to the monastery, as if making excuses because of its location in an arid area, is called Udabno (desert - in Georgian). On the way, you will see the natural landscape of the neighborhood - a waterless steppe that changes color depending on the season, ridges of bizarre "design" hills and the outlines of the Caucasus Mountains visible in the distance. After short stops for photographing at the salt lake and / or other places we like, we will arrive at the main destination - the monastery that still functions today.

Itinerário

  1. 1

Landscapes of the Gareja Desert This is a trip to a completely different Georgia: you will discover the stunning, unlike anything else, the nature of a real stone desert, where there is no water, and the grass turns yellow and becomes dry in the middle of summer. On the way to the monastery, we will stop at such places of the Gareja Desert, where the breathtaking and harsh beauty of the views is breathtaking. You will be able to take photos from the best angles and perhaps get the chance to see wild foxes, jackals and eagles. And in the winter season, herds of sheep grazing in the yellow-red expanses will also fall into the frame.

  2. 2

Lavra David Cave Monastery You will visit the David Lavra - a functioning male monastery of the 6th century and look into the main temple of the monastery, walk along its territory and see the cell of David of Gareja with a source inside. I will tell you why this monk is one of the most revered saints in Georgia, I will tell you interesting facts and legends about his life, the history of the monastery. We will take a walk in the vicinity of the cave complex

  3. 3

Natlismtsemeli cave monastery You can end the excursion by visiting another cave monastery named after John the Baptist. The monastery is part of the David-Gareja complex and is located in an equally picturesque place. However, travelers and pilgrims rarely get here due to some distance from the beaten track. Before returning to Tbilisi, we can dine in a colorful Polish-Georgian cafe (in season: from April to October).

  4. 4

On the way back, we can visit a cozy winery for free.
