Itinerário

  1. 1

    Arrival and Old Tbilisi

Arrival: your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Tbilisi International Airport with a sign bearing your name, and drives you to your 4-star hotel in central Tbilisi, about 30 minutes away. Old Tbilisi walking tour: in the afternoon, start at 13th-century Metekhi Church above the Mtkvari River, ride the cable car up to Narikala Fortress for the classic view over the rooftops, then walk down to the domed sulphur baths of Abanotubani and the hidden Leghvtakhevi waterfall. Bridge of Peace and Rustaveli Avenue: cross the glass-and-steel bridge to Rike Park and finish on Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi's grand boulevard of theatres, galleries and cafés. The evening is free. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  2. 2

    Kakheti wine country

Bodbe Monastery: about two hours east of Tbilisi, set among cypress trees, where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century, is buried. Sighnaghi: walk the cobbled lanes and 18th-century walls of this hilltop town, with the Alazani Valley and the Greater Caucasus spread out below. Bread and churchkhela class: with a local family, bake tonis puri in a round clay oven and make churchkhela, strings of walnuts dipped in thickened grape juice. Family winery: see qvevri, the clay jars buried in the ground in which Georgians have made wine for thousands of years. Tasting is optional and paid locally. Drive back to Tbilisi in the evening. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  3. 3

Mtskheta, the Military Highway and Kazbegi

Mtskheta: Georgia's ancient capital, 30 minutes north of Tbilisi. Visit 6th-century Jvari Monastery on its hilltop above the meeting of two rivers, and 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where Georgia's kings were crowned and buried. Both are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri Fortress: join the Georgian Military Highway, stop above the turquoise reservoir, and explore the 17th-century fortress and its two domed churches on the water's edge. Gudauri and the Jvari Pass: stand on the mosaic balcony of the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, high above the valley, then cross the pass at 2,379 m and descend to Stepantsminda. Gergeti Trinity Church: a 4x4 climbs to the 14th-century church at 2,170 m, standing alone beneath the glaciers of Mount Kazbek. Overnight in a 4-star hotel in Stepantsminda, at the foot of Mount Kazbek.

  4. 4

    Uplistsikhe and Borjomi

Uplistsikhe: drive back down the Military Highway and west past Gori to a town carved into the sandstone above the Mtkvari River and lived in for more than two thousand years. Walk its rock-cut halls, lanes and temples up to the small church on the summit. Borjomi Gorge: continue west along the wooded gorge of the Mtkvari to the 19th-century spa town of Borjomi. Borjomi Central Park: stroll through the park and taste the famous mineral water straight from the spring. Overnight in Borjomi.

  5. 5

Kutaisi, Gelati Monastery and Prometheus Cave

Into Imereti: drive west over the Rikoti Pass to Kutaisi, Georgia's third-largest city, about two and a half hours. Gelati Monastery: founded in 1106 by King David the Builder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its medieval mosaics and frescoes. Bagrati Cathedral: the 11th-century cathedral on its hill above the Rioni River. Prometheus Cave: near Tskaltubo, a lit path of more than a kilometre through chambers of stalactites, stalagmites and underground lakes. Overnight in Kutaisi.

  6. 6

    Martvili Canyon and Batumi

Martvili Canyon: walk the paths above the narrow gorge the Abasha River has cut through the limestone, with its turquoise pools and waterfalls. A short boat ride is optional and paid locally. To the Black Sea: drive to the coast at Batumi, about three hours. Batumi Boulevard: in the evening, stroll the seafront promenade to the Alphabet Tower and the moving Ali and Nino statue. Overnight in Batumi.

  7. 7

    Batumi Botanical Garden and departure
