Sharjah is the third-most populous city in the United Arab Emirates. It borders Dubai to the south and Ajman to the north, and the three cities form one continuous urban area. UNESCO named Sharjah the Arab Capital of Culture in 1998 and World Book Capital for 2019, and the city has museums of archaeology, natural history, science, heritage and Islamic art. In Khalid Lagoon, Al Noor Island is a landscaped island of gardens, art installations and a butterfly house.
Its culture: UNESCO named it the Arab Capital of Culture in 1998 and World Book Capital for 2019. Its old city center is being restored and preserved as the Heart of Sharjah.
Walk its landscaped gardens and sculptural pathways, see the contemporary art installations, and visit the Butterfly House, a climate-controlled dome where butterflies fly freely.
Our entry ticket lists about three hours. The island is small enough to walk in an afternoon, and it is at its best in the late afternoon and after dark, when the lighting comes on.
