Über dieses Erlebnis

Five days to see the best of Georgia without planning a thing. Your driver meets you at Tbilisi airport, and for the next four days your own car and English-speaking guide take you through the old capital, high into the Greater Caucasus, out to the vineyards of Kakheti and west to the cave town of Uplistsikhe and the spa town of Borjomi. You stay all four nights in the same 4-star hotel in central Tbilisi, so there is no packing and unpacking between days.

Day 5, departure: a free morning, then your private transfer to the airport.

Reiseverlauf

  1. 1

    Arrival and Old Tbilisi

Arrival: your driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Tbilisi International Airport with a sign bearing your name, and drives you to your 4-star hotel in central Tbilisi, about 30 minutes away. Old Tbilisi walking tour: in the afternoon, start at 13th-century Metekhi Church above the Mtkvari River, ride the cable car up to Narikala Fortress for the classic view over the rooftops, then walk down to the domed sulphur baths of Abanotubani and the hidden Leghvtakhevi waterfall. Bridge of Peace and Rustaveli Avenue: cross the glass-and-steel bridge to Rike Park and finish on Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi's grand boulevard of theatres, galleries and cafés. The evening is free. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  2. 2

Mtskheta, the Military Highway and Kazbegi

Mtskheta: Georgia's ancient capital, 30 minutes north of Tbilisi. Visit 6th-century Jvari Monastery on its hilltop above the meeting of two rivers, and 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where Georgia's kings were crowned and buried. Both are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri Fortress: join the Georgian Military Highway, stop above the turquoise reservoir, and explore the 17th-century fortress and its two domed churches on the water's edge. Gudauri and the Jvari Pass: stand on the mosaic balcony of the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, high above the valley, then cross the pass at 2,379 m and descend to Stepantsminda. Gergeti Trinity Church: a 4x4 climbs to the 14th-century church at 2,170 m, standing alone beneath the glaciers of Mount Kazbek. Drive back to Tbilisi in the evening, about three hours. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  3. 3

    Kakheti wine country

Bodbe Monastery: about two hours east of Tbilisi, set among cypress trees, where Saint Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia in the 4th century, is buried. Sighnaghi: walk the cobbled lanes and 18th-century walls of this hilltop town, with the Alazani Valley and the Greater Caucasus spread out below. Bread and churchkhela class: with a local family, bake tonis puri in a round clay oven and make churchkhela, strings of walnuts dipped in thickened grape juice. Family winery: see qvevri, the clay jars buried in the ground in which Georgians have made wine for thousands of years. Tasting is optional and paid locally. Drive back to Tbilisi in the evening. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  4. 4

    Uplistsikhe and Borjomi

Uplistsikhe: drive west for about an hour and a half, past Gori, to a town carved into the sandstone above the Mtkvari River and lived in for more than two thousand years. Walk its rock-cut halls, lanes and temples up to the small church on the summit. Borjomi Gorge: continue west along the wooded gorge of the Mtkvari to the 19th-century spa town of Borjomi. Borjomi Central Park: stroll through the park and taste the famous mineral water straight from the spring. Drive back to Tbilisi in the evening, about two and a half hours. Overnight in Tbilisi.

  5. 5

    Free morning and departure

Breakfast and a free morning: browse the Dry Bridge flea market, shop for wine and spices, or book a sulphur bath (not included). Your driver then collects you from the hotel for the private transfer to Tbilisi International Airport, timed to your flight.
