Itinerario

  1. 1

    Knossos Palace

The Palace of Knossos, located on the Greek island of Crete, is one of the most significant archaeological sites from the Bronze Age and offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Minoan civilization. Thought to be Europe’s oldest city, Knossos flourished between 2000 and 1400 BCE and served as a cultural and administrative hub for the Minoans. The palace itself, believed to be built around 1900 BCE, stands out for its complex architectural style, sophisticated infrastructure, and the colorful frescoes that decorated its walls. Though initially excavated in the early 20th century by British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans, new findings and interpretations continue to evolve our understanding of Knossos. Covering an area of approximately 20,000 square meters, the palace is an intricate labyrinth of rooms, corridors, stairways, and courtyards that served both ceremonial and residential purposes. One of the most iconic elements of Knossos is the "Throne Room," believed to have been used for religious or administrative ceremonies, featuring a stone throne flanked by frescoes depicting mythological creatures. Another remarkable feature of the palace is its advanced infrastructure, with evidence of early plumbing systems that allowed water to flow through the palace for both practical and ceremonial use. These innovations reveal the Minoans' impressive understanding of engineering and urban planning, setting Knossos apart as a marvel of ancient architecture. In addition to its architectural and engineering feats, Knossos is known for its stunning frescoes that offer insight into Minoan culture, beliefs, and daily life. The vibrant paintings depict scenes of nature, marine life, religious rituals, and athletic events, such as the famous "Bull-Leaping" fresco, which shows a ceremonial act of acrobats leaping over bulls. This imagery suggests that the bull held religious significance for the Minoans, possibly tied to the myth of the Minotaur and the labyrinth, which later Greek myths placed at Knossos. These works highlight the Minoans' artistic skills, as well as their reverence for nature and animal symbolism. Today, the Knossos archaeological site remains a crucial link to understanding the roots of European civilization. As one of Greece’s most visited attractions, it draws thousands of visitors each year, eager to walk through the halls of an ancient palace and witness the vibrant remnants of Minoan art and culture. The palace's ruins, partially reconstructed by Evans, provide an immersive experience that brings to life the achievements of a sophisticated society long before the rise of classical Greece.

    Olive Grove Farm

A visit to an olive grove farm in Crete is a delightful dive into one of the island’s oldest traditions. Walking among centuries-old olive trees, you can feel the rich history of these groves, which have been cultivated by countless generations of Cretans. Many farms offer a guided tour led by local experts who share insights into the cultivation and harvesting process, as well as the role of olive oil in Cretan culture and diet. They’ll take you through every step of olive oil production, from tree to bottle, showing how traditional techniques blend with modern practices to produce this “liquid gold.” After exploring the grove, you’ll often move to a tasting area, where you’ll get to sample the farm’s own oils. Tasting olive oil is a sensory experience; you’ll learn how to properly taste, taking note of the oil’s aroma, color, and unique flavors, from mild and fruity to bold and peppery. The tasting usually includes a variety of oils—single-origin extra virgin, cold-pressed, and sometimes even flavored or aged varieties—to help you appreciate the differences in quality and flavor. Often, tastings are paired with fresh bread, Cretan herbs, and perhaps a bit of local cheese, which brings out the oil’s flavors beautifully. Beyond the tasting, many olive farms also offer a small shop where you can purchase oils and other olive-based products to bring a piece of Crete home. This visit is more than a tour; it’s an immersion into the island’s way of life, rooted deeply in its olive trees and the timeless value placed on quality, tradition, and sustainability. Whether you’re a food lover or just curious about the magic of olive oil, this experience gives you a taste of Crete’s essence in every sense.
