The wine region of Rioja shares its name with one of the administrative regions in Spain (La Rioja), but the wine region itself does not coincide 100% geographically with it. The Rioja designation of origin extends over 54,000 hectares across three different autonomous communities (La Rioja, Basque Country, and Navarre). Rioja is the Spanish flagship for red wines worldwide and has achieved this status today thanks to a past filled with events related to wine.
Roman objects used for wine production have been found in Rioja. These containers were used for fermenting wine. Their presence confirms the production of wine in Rioja since ancient times. Subsequently, monasteries played an important role in wine production. There is an act by which the King of Navarre donated vineyards to the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla. Additionally, Rioja is part of the Camino de Santiago, and pilgrims were offered wine while staying in the monasteries along the Way.
In 1560, Rioja wine producers agreed to put a common label on their wines. The idea was to guarantee the origin of their wines, and this has continued to the present day.

There, along with our guide, we will take a guided walking tour in Laguardia showing you the most picturesque buildings, churches, and streets of this medieval town, and we will also show you some of the cellars hidden inside.
At the end of this lovely excursion, our driver guide will take you back to your hotel in Bilbao.

Summary of our itinerary
Please see a summary of the areas/ villages we covered during this tour. Please understand that this is very flexible and the guide may adapt the itinerary based on your needs or preferences. You will start with a pick up at your hotel in San Sebastian. The journey from San Sebastian to Rioja Alavesa will take approximately 1 hour and 20 min (Bilbao is located 71 miles away). There will be stops for photos in vineyards and wineries designed by important architects. We will enjoy a guided tour and wine tasting at a winery. Then, we will stop in the village of Laguardia for a short guided walking tour and free time for lunch.

Stop for photos in vineyards and wineries designed by famous architects
Bodegas Ysios, designed by Santiago Calatrava, is a prominent winery in Rioja Alavesa known for its avant-garde architecture. The Marqués de Riscal winery building is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture, designed by the renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry. Depending on the time available, we will be able to see the exterior of one or both wineries. The vineyards in the area are characterized by their limestone soils and the influence of the Mediterranean climate, ideal for the production of high-quality wines.

Visit to a winery in Rioja Alavesa
Visitors can expect to see extensive vineyards cultivated on terraces, where the grapes that give rise to the region's famous wines are produced. Within the facilities, they can tour the fermentation and aging rooms, where they will be shown the wine-making process. Additionally, they can learn about local grape varieties and taste different wines while enjoying the unique ambiance.

Laguardia Hilltown
Laguardia is the capital of one of the most famous wine regions in Spain, Rioja. Laguardia retains its old enclosure, the walls and doors for access to the town. Its location on a high, facing the Sierra de Cantabria, offers extraordinary views of the colors of the Rioja area. Laguardia has a number of houses with interesting facades. The town is also filled with more modest facades, where red peppers can be hung on strings. All this increases the chromaticism of the cobbled streets of Laguardia. The Church of Santa María de los Reyes, the tenth century, was perhaps a Templar Monastery.

The underground cellars of Laguardia
