About the Ann van Dyk Cheetah Centre

Established in 1971 and originally known as the De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre , the centre works in breeding, research and conservation education. Its work includes maintaining genetic diversity in cheetahs and African wild dogs.

The centre is a nonprofit organisation funded through activities including tours, donations, sponsorships and its adoption programme. A visit offers an opportunity to learn about that work directly from its guides.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two tour options?

The guided vehicle tour covers the centre’s wildlife experience. The cheetah run package adds a running demonstration before the guided tour. Select the run package if seeing the cheetah run is a priority.

Is the cheetah run available every day?

No. The centre currently advertises the run on Wednesday and Sunday mornings at 08:00. Availability must be confirmed for your date, and accommodation pickup will be earlier than the centre’s start time.

Can children join this tour?

Children aged seven and older can join these vehicle-tour options with an adult. If you are travelling with younger children, contact us before booking to discuss whether the centre’s separate walking experience would suit your group.

Can I touch or pet a cheetah?

No. The centre does not offer touching or petting to the public. Visitors observe the animals under the guidance of centre staff.

Is this a safari with free-roaming animals?

The visit takes place at a conservation centre with animal enclosures. It suits visitors looking for a guided educational experience focused on cheetahs and African wild dogs.

Is my transfer private, and will other visitors join us at the centre?

Your accommodation transfer is normally private, but depending on bookings may be shared. The centre’s guided experience is shared with other visitors. A private transfer does not automatically mean an exclusive safari vehicle at the centre.

Can I book this tour on the day of my flight?

Contact us with your flight details before booking. We need to assess the pickup location, tour schedule, traffic allowance and airport transfer arrangements before advising whether it fits your travel plans.

Can I take photographs?

Bring a camera or phone and follow the centre guide’s instructions about where and when to photograph. Animal positions and behaviour vary, so particular photographs cannot be promised.

What is your cancellation policy?

You may cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before the scheduled tour start time. Cancellations made after that deadline are non-refundable. Cancellation deadlines use South African local time.
